I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I started. I had found the first book of the series interesting but thought that it was missing elements to make it a really good book.
This book however is a much better story.
The characters were much richer in this book. The two Main characters grow from sex starved, frienemies in the first book into two fully fleshed out individuals who have a solid motivation for their actions, independent feelings that arise from 'relatable' experiences, and independent, realistic goals.
The emotional roller-coasters the reader went through in this book were also better in that they were richer.
I loved the authors use of descriptions in this book an example of this can be seen in the opening paragraphs that set up the emotional tone of sadness, desperation, confusion and isolation that I felt would be spot on for the characters.
The plot was much more developed then the first. It was full of twists and zingers that took me by surprise.
I found myself sucked into the mystery elements from the start. What was Refuge Inc,? How was the compound built? Who was the prophet? And so on. The story grew from there into an action packed, thriller.
When I consider that the author is an independent author without the resources that authors attached to big named publishers have, I feel this story was extremely well written.
I have to say that there are a fair amount of spelling issues (wrong words) like instead of saying their plan, it says their plain. Or instead of the word 'the' it says 'they'.
It took me out of the story a second or two while I thought about what I read and found the misplaced word, but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't reason it out quickly and get back to the story.
Yet over all I feel this story was a very good read. One that I truly enjoyed and will read again. And So I give it five full stars.

I had a rough time getting through this, but I believe it's just because this isn't my kind of read. Leslie Lee Sanders has an amazing imagination. You can tell that right fromt he first page
Book Two of the Refuge Inc series follows Adam and Elliot as they uncover the truth about the Refuge Inc Compound. The characters have grown immensely in the month or so since we’ve last seen them, and they have settled into their new lives as a police officer of sorts, and a cook. The living standards leave plenty to be desired, but no one complains because they’re safe and sound within the compound’s walls and are given the necessities to survive the disaster they’ve been dealt. I loved that the mysteries of the compound pull you in immediately - who is that mysterious voice on the PA system? Why do some residents have their own clothes and jewellery, while others have absolutely no personal items? Where are the animals? We are also introduced to an array of side characters who bring a lot to the story - I’m quite fond of Anita and Mason, myself. This is an excellent addition to the series.
"Amid the Darkness" is a much better written story than the first book. I was amazed at the transformation of the characters and the actual plot. Leslie takes you on a roller coaster ride in this book and I totally enjoy it.

This book picks up about one month after the first book leaves off. Adam and Elliot have settled into their new life inside the Refuge, Inc. Compound and Elliott has given Adam his space though the two remain closer than ever in a friend sort of way. Because of lying about being a police officer, Adam is assigned to duty as a guard and Elliot is a cook. Elliot has his suspicions about the place and even Adam has doubts. They both deal with separate issues and in Adam's case its his past that may end their relationship for good. In seeking to gain forgiveness from the two women he lied to during the first story, Elliot begins to unravel the lies in the Refuge. Adam inadvertently comes to the attention of 'The Prophet' in the place and he is exposed to the truth. Working separately and together they look to make their escape, but it is not easy.
While the first story was character driven, this one switches it up and focuses on the action and has a thriller quality to it. Not to say that there isn't any character development because there is; its just not the focus. This was a fast exciting read that gave many answers to the questions about Refuge forcing Adam and Elliot to step up and do what they have to do for their own safety and for what is right. This installment in the series introduces some new characters and brings back some returning ones. Each character may be more or less than they seem to be and that was what made the story exciting too. Elliot gets a bit angsty at times, but seeing what he's going through I'll give him a pass. Adam is the surprise. If one didn't know any better, it would be hard to believe that he wasn't the trained officer that he pretends to be. He really stepped it up in this one. I loved how he figured out pretty fast what was important to him and chose the right, but tough path in his choices. Though this ending wasn't quite as abrupt, there is still room for more of the story to continue and I'm looking forward to it.
I recommend this book/series to those who enjoy M/M Post-Apocalyptic Romances.
